General Overview

The Senior Medical Director will oversee the design and implementation of Mass General Brigham (MGB) efforts aimed at dismantling structural racism in medicine. The scope of this role includes overseeing the multi-million dollar implementation of enterprise wide programs aimed at measuring inequity and racism, improving access to digital health care and multilingual health care, addressing social determinants of health and primary care quality, and advocating for payer contracting and health policies that promote anti-racism. This leadership role will establish the foundation for a key Mass General Brigham strategy moving forward, and the Senior Medical Director will represent the clinical health equity efforts across the organization externally and in various internal leadership settings.

Achieving success in this role will require close collaboration with the leadership of the Quality and Patient Experience (QPE) department including the Primary Care programs (e.g. primary care quality and behavioral health), Specialty Care programs (e.g. Patient Reported Outcomes, clinical collaboration teams), and the Digital Patient Experience team. The Senior Medical Director will also need to collaborate with the MGB Population Health Management (PHM) team and the Digital Health team. Finally, the Senior Medical Director will participate and where appropriate lead external relationships related to payer contracting and policy advocacy for anti-racism.

This position reports directly to the Chief Patient Experience and Equity Officer (CPEEO). An essential component of this role is convening clinical, quality, and administrative leaders from across MGB institutions to arrive at consensus on issues that are core to addressing health equity. The selected candidate will successfully balance an open, inclusive process with the ability to arrive at rapid, reliable decisions. The selected candidate will represent the CPEEO on various projects and committees, including report outs to the MGB Board of Directors, regular meetings with MGB executive leadership, as well as hospital, physician, nursing, and other leadership across MGB clinical institutions.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
General Responsibilities in anti-racism work
--- Lead system-wide efforts to combat structural racism and improve the outcomes of healthcare for all patients served by MGB hospitals and providers
--- Leverage knowledge of disparities in healthcare and racism to inform clinical program implementation
--- Motivate clinicians and staff to engage in large new portfolio of health equity work designed to fight racism
--- Communicate portfolio of work both internal and external to the organization
--- Dedicates a minimum of 0.5 FTE to this role

Program Implementation areas
--- Improve collection of patient race, ethnicity, and language preference data across enterprise
--- Implement new programs to increase translator and interpreter services across the system
--- Implement programs designed to decrease differences in access to digital health by race, ethnicity, language and community of residence
--- Establish culture of equity improvement by leading all clinical departments to implement clinical health equity improvement projects
--- Lead effort to identify and eliminate racialized medicine in clinical care (e.g. remove inappropriate use of race in clinical algorithms)
--- Support the evolution and expansion of social determinants of health screening and connections with resources to mitigate the gaps
--- Support internal policy development that eliminates discriminatory behavior within MGB offices, clinics, hospitals and all areas of administrative operations.

--- Support the development external policy positions of MGB on issues of racial justice
--- Participate in establishment of payer contracting strategy to reduce inequity and fight racism
--- Works to provide regular updates to system-wide senior and executive leadership on progress related to anti-racism programming.
--- Identifies opportunities to advance the scholarship at Mass General Brigham by publishing peer-reviewed manuscripts based on the activities included in the role
--- Performs other responsibilities as determined by the Chief Patient Experience and Equity Officer


--- Respected and practicing clinician with MD, DO, or similar degree required
--- Maintain an active clinical practice within Mass General Brigham of at least 0.20 FTE
--- Minimum of 5 years of experience in quality and safety and specifically the application of health equity; either in clinical operations or research and innovation
--- Minimum of 5 years of experience in leading complex projects and teams involving senior clinicians and administrators
--- Expertise in measuring clinical quality of care for use in quality improvement

--- Demonstrated ability to formulate and execute strategy
--- Strong leadership and mentoring skills
--- Strong knowledge of clinical care processes across disciplines and across the care continuum and how to use enabling technology to standardize and optimize clinical care delivery
--- Experienced in planning, organizing, prioritizing, delegating and supervising
--- Proficient in exercising initiative, judgment, problem solving and decision making
--- Exceptional communication skills, including strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills
--- Ability to build and manage relationships in a highly complex and changing environment
--- Skilled at partnering with and influencing senior leaders

--- General day hours with flexibility to meet the demands of the position, including early morning and evening meetings as needed
--- Standard business environment with frequent local travel between Mass General Brigham System sites
--- May require travel for external training, networking, and dissemination of findings
--- Leads activities of team of up to 10 central and 50 distributed staff at MGB clinics/hospitals
