The Complex Claims Unit Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a Specialty or Environmental claims team that handles complex coverage, high exposure, long tail or latent injury claims and a variety of unique loss types. Achieves goals for a top-tier customer experience, employee engagement, loss cost accuracy, and consistent, quality claims handling practices. Job Responsibilities

  • Manages field claims team to ensure that adequate resources and technical skills exist to handle claims in accordance with Company service standards and expectations.
  • Focuses staff on continuous improvement, engaging in the transformation and sustainability efforts, looking for ways to build capabilities, and driving organizational effectiveness.
  • Participates in short to medium-term strategic business planning for field claims operations; prepares, recommends and manages to the office's annual budget to ensure appropriate resource allocations and expense levels.
  • Reviews and approves complex coverage positions, coaching claims employees on proper positioning and articulation of coverage.
  • Reviews and approves, within assigned authority limits, claim expenses and settlements that exceed the claims employees authority level; appropriately refers claim expenses and settlements that exceed personal authority limits for approval.
  • Monitors and evaluates the claims reserve practices within the office and ensures that actual reserves are accurate and established promptly.
  • Prepares and distributes management reports analyzing and documenting office operations and performance; identifies, analyzes and reports on claims processing trends and issues.
  • Maintains awareness of existing and proposed legislation, court decisions and emerging trends in claims litigation to monitor the company's compliance with state and federal legislation
  • Actively attracts, develops, and engages talented claims employees while simultaneously addressing employees who are not meeting expectations.
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial casualty insurance, claims investigation, complex coverage evaluation, loss assessment, reserving, insurance legal & regulatory environment, claims processes and management, applications/systems and procedures.
  • Other skills required include: planning/organizing work, excellent communication (verbal, written, presentation, etc.), collaborating with others, diplomacy/tact, business/financial acumen, and adaptability.
  • Strong history of continuous improvement and collaboration.
  • 7+ years of relevant and progressively more responsible claims work experience, bachelor's degree preferred.
