Brigham (MGB) is a world- wide recognized Health system providing
exceptional patient care within Massachusetts, New England and the
rest of the globe. Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts
General Hospital are also world leaders in research aimed at
improving the health status of the population. The Mass General
Brigham Sports initiative launched in 2020 with the goal of
creating a regional, national and international hub for Sports
Medicine and related Specialties. To propel this work, the
initiative will launch a state-of-the-art Sports Performance and
Research Center (SPaRC) and a robust Sports Medicine Clinical
Research department. Clinical Outcomes Research will focus on
clinical research within the MGB Sports Medicine Division
evaluating non surgical, surgical and regenerative medicine
treatments. The Sports Research Director directly oversees the
Outcomes Research team as well as the organization and management
of the outcome research infrastructure including registries, data
banks and biorepositories. The Sports Research Director leads the
MGB Sports Medicine research Council (MRSC) to plan, coordinate and
communicate research strategy, oversight of outcomes date
collections, review of KPI's, planning of research strategies and
potential conflict mitigation. The Sports Research Director should
possess a thorough knowledge of IRB and FDA related as well as
current DOD, NIH and major foundational grant related or other
clinical research related policies/procedures. There is an
expectation to procure federal or large foundational grant funding.
The individual holding this position will be afforded a faculty
appointment with Harvard Medical School at the level of assistant
or associate Professor depending on academic qualifications.
Relevant responsibilities include, but are not limited to the
following:
- Oversight of Registry and Biorepository
- Interact with Epic, Biobank and Neurobank regarding data
collection and mechanisms
- Be informed about research efforts within MGB Sports, maintain
a list of ongoing projects
- Organize and Report back to the MGB Sports Research Council on
research projects and priorities
- Outcomes based research project supervision
- Oversee organization of research assistants and post-docs with
regards to outcomes research related tasks and duties
- Develop independent research projects and seek out funding
opportunities as PI or Co-PI for federal, regional and foundational
funding opportunities
- Drive, write and supervise Critical reviews, Appraised topics
or Systematic Reviews with Residents, Fellows and faculty
- Directly lead Sports Medicine-related research activities,
including:
- Designing specific research projects, and gaining necessary
approval for their completion
- Recruiting research staff to lead and support specific research
projects
- Securing grant, industry, and philanthropic funding to support
research projects
- Develop mechanisms to recruit participants for research
studies
- Successfully executing research projects, reporting on
progress, and ultimately publishing results
- Defining and building alignment around research topics of
focus
- Ensure compliance with department and hospital policies and IRB
processes
- Collaborate with Clinical activities in the Sports Performance
and Research Center and be actively engaged in translational
research projects including translation of findings from research
activities into patient-facing standards of care and services.
Collaboration with clinicians to ensure buy-in and uptake is
required.
- Develop and maintain external relationships, building
collaborative win-win agreements related to research
activities
- Internal reports/presentations. Regularly report on projects,
key milestones, and data to senior administrative and clinical
directors
- Content Matter Expertise. Serves as a clinical expert in
Patient related Outcomes Research and has a portfolio of funded,
relevant research. Develops subject matter expertise on broader MGB
Sports research efforts related to sports medicine, strength and
conditioning, nutrition, sports psychology, performance analysis,
and sport science data.
- Hire and manage highly qualified staff in a way that promotes a
supportive, respectful and equitable environment that includes
training, appropriate delegation, accountability, and growth
opportunities.
- All other duties as assigned Qualifications Qualifications:
- Earned a doctorate in Physical Therapy, Athletic training or
Public health or a related field, post doc, or equivalent.
- Clinical qualification (e.g. Sports Physical Therapist (Board
Certified or Eligible), Certified Athletic Trainer, Sports
Physician) a plus
- Strong publication and funding record commensurate with
academic level
- We seek a clinical scientist with strong research training, a
commitment to interdisciplinary research and effective
interpersonal skills. The candidate should possess a strong desire
to develop and conduct a nationally and internationally recognized
research program.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in sports medicine,
functional outcome and exercise research and ability to take
ownership and responsibility for multiple projects and groups
concurrently.
- Has the ability to quickly learn other information systems used
within the institution.
- Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working
relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability
to structure and lead discussions.
- Capable of juggling multiple tasks and competing priorities and
work in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and delegate
responsibilities.
- Ability to serve as liaison between broader MGB sports research
efforts.
- Demonstrated ability to apply, receive and manage grant funds,
including NIH and DOD funding sources
- Mature biostatistics skills to independently analyze data with
standard statistical tools and methods.
- Contribute to regular manuscripts, grants and scientific
presentations on local, national, and international levels.
- Have some level of clinical experience (Physical Therapist,
ATC, or MD candidate preferred) and maintain a clinical
