Enterprise Research IS (ERIS supports the vast Research IT and analytics needs across Massachusetts General Brigham (MGB). You will be a key member of ERIS' IaaS team and will have a broad range of responsibilities including: effective server installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of physical, virtual, cloud and HPC cluster hardware and OS's plus related infrastructure including networking. You will participate in technical research and support to enable continued innovation within the infrastructure. You will specifically be responsible for ensuring system hardware, operating systems, networking and related procedures, adhere to organizational standards, continued automation deployment, follow security guidelines, and provide members of the MGB research community and collaborators with appropriate resources needed for their digital research. Systems supported include Linux and Windows physical, virtual and cloud-based servers, HPC clusters and related storage systems, concentrating on virtualization technologies such as VMware and automation with Ansible and Terraform.The unifying characteristics of the position are an eagerness to quickly learn new technologies, breadth in open-source technical skills, ability to work independently, outstanding customer service skills, and the ability to help teams and projects successfully accomplish their objectives. Candidates are not expected to be deeply knowledgeable in all areas, but must demonstrate the ability and desire to learn how to support a large and diverse, research-to-production environment. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Server Administration: Manage and administer production servers used by researchers and Research Centers. This includes deployment, monitoring system performance, networking, patching, data storage and backup/restore needs, maintainability, and availability. Responsible for tier 1 monitoring of servers/systems and 2 technical support for break/fix, setup/installation support, patching and escalation support.This will include working with various hardware and software vendors through support agreements or with open-source community as well as ERIS service owners.Responsible for the inventory and tracking of computer related equipment. Develop and maintain system documentation using wiki and knowledge management tools.Create and close work orders for tasks using established standardsPerform other duties as required by the situation and circumstances Occasionally lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds and possible significant fieldwork around the BWH / MGH campuses and satellite buildings.Off-hours on-call support is required.Qualifications Qualifications BA/BS degree required or equivalent combination of skills/experience.3+ years of experience required in technical support within a large, networked computing environment.2+ years hands-on, extensive Linux experience in a virtual (VMWare preferred) or IaaS cloud-based environment.Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required Must be capable of contributing within a team, exhibit a high level of initiative, and have an eagerness to learn new technologies.Demonstrated ability in providing Linux systems administration and server troubleshooting to a community with diverse computing needs.Candidate must possess knowledge and understanding of Linux and with Windows server configurations including networking and support of RHEL, and CentOS infrastructure. Knowledge and understanding of security and monitoring software packages including but not limited to O/S, network, application, and intrusion detection tools.
