Job Description:

Minimum Knowledge and Experience:

  • At least 5+ years of demonstrated experience in a technical role within a complex railroad organization. - Experience of overseeing and mentoring technical personnel.
  • Strong knowledge of traction and rolling stock, fault finding, and modern approaches to equipment maintenance.
  • Demonstrated acumen with regulatory requirements affecting passenger railroad operations including FRA, APTA and OSHA regulations.
  • Demonstrated capability to influence, negotiate and facilitate buy-in with a variety of stakeholders. - Experience of successfully implementing change in a heavily unionized environment. -
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance and work order scheduling techniques. Skills:

    • Excellent written, verbal, communication, interpersonal, and presentational skills. Key Accountabilities (Essential Job Duties): Leadership:
      • Coordinate with Technical Director, CMO, other Mechanical Directors and Technical Team to prioritize resources of Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineer, and HVAC Engineer.
      • Demonstrate understanding and adhere to the KCS principals of Employee Engagement, Operational Excellence & Safety, Customer Satisfaction, Corporate Social Responsibility and Economic Performance.
      • Provide managerial leadership to the Mechanical Department employees. This includes individual coaching, mentoring development, and managerial support.
      • Function as a rolling stock subject matter expert to provide technical assistance to transportation crews and mechanical personnel.
      • Lead and support technical investigations into significant incidents and ensure any actions identified are followed up and closed out. Standards and Training:
        • Support the training department in the development of training courses and materials and provide informal training, instructional sessions, and firsthand training to employees.
        • Ensure all standards (CFR, APTA and other applicable standards) are met by Mechanical Training and Maintenance Practices.
        • Oversight of the Engineering Change activities relating to all equipment maintained by the Mechanical Department to ensure they deliver safe, compliant, cost-effective solutions consistent with all standards and best engineering practice. Continual Improvement:
          • Drive improvement of safety performance coordinated with annual safety plan for the Mechanical Department.
          • Reduce the number of repeat defects and improve OTP in support of business plan to achieve 93.75% OTP through root cause problem solving and by producing minimum scope of work documents and check lists to provide structured guidance to support fault finding of equipment.
          • Identify problem areas and recommend equipment service changes and/or modifications through investigation and detection of equipment defects.
          • Work with the Technical Team and MBTA to develop prototypes and oversee first-of-class installs.
          • Work with original equipment manufacturers and suppliers to determine root cause of failures and identify areas of improvement.
          • Generate Work Instructions and other documents in support of modifications and Engineering Change process. Mechanical Procurement Support:
            • Support Mechanical Department with requisitions for non-inventory materials.
            • Assist Purchasing Team with developing and reviewing Request for Proposals for Material and Services to support the Mechanical Department.
            • Support Purchasing Team and Mechanical Department with reviewing replacement parts for obsolete parts and finding alternative parts when necessary. General Requirements:
              • Document key processes to ensure they are consistently delivered and there is no uncertainty about the scope of work that is required.
              • Support the delivery of Keolis and MBTA Projects as directed.
              • Support the other members of the Technical Team as required.
              • Perform other duties as assigned. Working Conditions (including Physical Demands):
                • This role is primarily Monday - Friday Day Shift but may require occasional overnight or weekend support.
                • There is a mixture of office work and on equipment troubleshooting.
                • Some travel to Commuter Rail locations other than CRMF is expected.
