Job Description:

DescriptionComander Research LabPOSITION SUMMARY: We are seeking a talented postdoctoral fellow to join the Ocular Genomics Institute team to study the genetic causality of and gene therapies for inherited retinal degenerations (IRDs). IRDs are important causes of vision loss that affect people of all ages. These disorders cause vision loss via dysfunction and death of the photoreceptor and retinal pigment epithelial cells of the retina. The first FDA-approved gene therapy for an inherited disease was for an IRD, and gene therapies for several specific genetic forms of IRD show promise in clinical trials. Our research uses the latest techniques in genome editing and in functional genomics to address challenges in developing new therapies and in understanding the genetic basis of Mendelian disease. We are looking for a postdoc to join our NIH- and foundation-funded projects: 1) Many disease genes are too large to be delivered using current vector technology. You can join our program to develop and translate genome editing tools to treat IRDs in situ, including using base editing tools. 2) To take advantage of a gene therapy, a correct genetic diagnosis is needed among the >200 IRD disease genes which have been identified to cause retinal disease, but the genetic cause of disease remains elusive for ~1/3rd of affected patients. You can join our program to design and implement high throughput assays for the characterization of DNA variants of unknown significance to determine which variants are disease-causing (functional genomics) and increase the diagnostic rate of genetic testing. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Read, analyze and summarize published literature Design and execute in vitro and in vivo Undertake relevant coursework if required by mentor.
