The Role: Guardian Agriculture is looking to hire a backend Software Engineer to complete critical path service development for our large autonomous electric aircraft systems. Are you hands-on and prefer a position where you can directly see the impact of your work on a system? This role will require familiarity with hardware, significant on hardware testing, and rapid iteration. You can be developing a feature one day and see the feature in a test flight on the next. You will design, build, test, and evolve the services fundamental to the successful operation of our system. You will work with users to think critically about what development should be prioritized and get buy-in on critical projects. User groups of this system include field operations crew, maintenance teams, engineering teams, and end customers. You will become a go-to resource for developing, testing, and diagnosing complex electromechanical systems that operate robustly in regulated, unstructured environments. The Team: Guardian Agriculture is developing large multicopters for applying agricultural chemicals to high-value crops. Relative to existing plane- and helicopter-based crop spraying solutions, our systems radically improve precision and safety while reducing chemical use, reducing impact on pollinating insects, and minimizing opportunities for organisms to acquire chemical resistance. Guardian is a small, multi-disciplinary team of talented engineers, technicians, and operators who prioritize high reliability product and service design over exploratory R&D. We are a hands-on team and split our time between development work, system testing, and field deployments. Responsibilities: Design, build, test, and evolve backend services primarily in Python that manage system state, expose data to a React frontend, or process ingested data Deploy backend services you develop to GCP or locally to the aircraft system Navigate the complexity of managing a microservice architecture and help it evolve Be a go-to resource for delivering general backend software solutions Monitor, triage, and address general software issues according to customer impact and business needs Design and carry-out R&D test activities on test benches and at test sites Analyze flight data to identify opportunities for improvement and increased capabilities Interface with management, operations, and test team members to get buy in on key development projects and focus future development efforts Work in an environment that supports your individual growth by providing challenging tasks to solve, the freedom to work your way, and resources to acquire new skills Requirements: Minimum of 3 years relevant work experience or equivalent experience BS in a scientific or engineering field or equivalent experience Fluency in Python Fluency with Ubuntu and Linux command line scripting and package management Desire and ability to learn Ability to balance forward-thinking implementation choices with delivering solutions that meet immediate business needs Desire to work in a fast, high-growth startup environment that respects its engineers and customers Nice to Haves: Familiarity with Docker Network design experience Familiarity with electromechanical systems Benefits: Hybrid work schedule, flexible time off, competitive salary, stock options, comprehensive benefits package, daily lunch, lots of tools, and the opportunity to build,use, and play with flying machines that will have a positive environmental impact.
